Prescription Drug Addiction

Not too long ago, patients with depression or drug addiction were institutionalized because there was no clear understanding of the biologic basis of their disease. In the past two decades the ability to treat depression medically has led to tremendous change in the lives of millions of Americans. The disease of prescription painkiller dependence is similarly undergoing a drastic change. Dr. Clifford Bernstein and Dr. Lowenstein are specialist in the field of pain management who are nationally recognized for their pioneering work with pain management and prescription painkiller dependency, they are experts in the medical treatment of reversing opiate dependency.

The brain has responded to the presence of the medication by increasing the number of receptors for the drug. The body stops producing endorphins because it is receiving opiates instead, causing a physical dependency on the external supply of opiates. This means that if patients attempt to stop or reduce their medication, they will experience the painful series of physiologic changes of the withdrawal syndrome.

Until now, treatments for opiate dependence have been disappointing and unsuccessful. Patients are often still prescribed replacement drugs like methadone and Suboxone, which substitute for the original medication rather than treating the dependence.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has reported that there are over 4.7 million adults dependent on prescription painkillers in the United States, representing up to 2% of the US adult population overall.

Our medical staff experience on prescription drug addiction treatment program has made them leaders is this field for over a decade with unsurpassed success rates…
